Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda is done in Nyungwe forest National Park which is located South west of Kigali capital of Rwanda. The forest is home to about 400 chimpanzees and represents one of the last intact populations in the area.In addition to several wildchimpanzees, there are currently two groups of habituated chimpanzees which are open for visitors to track. One in cyamdungo and the second one at the Uwinka section at the Mayebe point.
A third group located in the northern section of the park at Gisovu is under habituation for later visitors tracking.Tracking Chimpanzees in Nyungwe is an exciting adventure activity which iis guided by well trained proffesionals both from African Adventure Travellers and the Nyungwe forest tourism department who will always provide our visitors with trackers for easy tracking or locating the chimpanzees using the chimpanzee calls, feeding sites, and nesting places as you trace your way through their montane baitat. Also, many other types of monkeys or primates can be spotted during the chimp experience.
Best time to see the chimps:
Since chimps are easily spotted in the morning, all our clients need to be a wake atleast by 5AM (Rwanda time), and you need to travel to Rwanda in June, july and August as the fig trees and other types of trees in Nyungwe have lots of ripe fruits. This would be the best time for viewing them as they dont make long journeys in search of fruits but rather concetrate in a small area.
What to carry during chimp tracking:
- Rain Jacket.
- Bottled water atleast 1-liter.
- Packed lunch.
- Walking stick.
- Over the ankle Hiking boots.
- Long pair of thick socks.
